The Scottish Irish Migration Initiative (SIMI) brings together scholars of migration based at the University of Edinburgh and University College Dublin. This initiative takes an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together researchers from across the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences to apply their expertise to the study of migration – particularly in relation to Scottish and Irish case studies. In this way, migration into, out of, and across Scotland and Ireland are considered in a variety of ways which have academic, political, and practitioner uses.

SIMI operates under a Memorandum of Agreement between both universities, which was signed in 2018, providing seed funding for the development of innovative research projects. Both universities have existing expertise in migration scholarship, therefore SIMI builds and learns from projects already established. SIMI’s work-in-progress projects are currently based in social work, policy, archives, and history.  For more information on SIMI’s approach and focuses, please see the About Us and Members pages.
